Meet the Next Breakout Artist to Watch Out for in 2020!

Meet Jan Dready, the next breakout artist to look out for this year! Last week I got the chance to sit down with him for a one-on-one interview. In May he dropped his summer hit “Blue Face.” With the buzz from his single… he is getting attention from Hot 97 where he earned 9th place out of 100 contestants in the “Who’s Next” competition. He is also one of the top competitors in this year’s Coast to Coast lineup.  Here is what he had say!

1. What got you into music?

My uncle Roger. He was very musically gifted. He would always dance and sing around the house. He was like an older brother to me.

2. Which artists would you like to collaborate with?

Post Malone, Chris Brown, Kid Cudi, Kanye, Sabrina Claudio… there’s too many to name!

3. If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?

How great of an actual human being I was!

4. If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Always stick to what you want and don’t let the opinions of others alter your true destiny.

5. What instruments do you play?

My vocals and I’m currently learning guitar.

6. Which artists inspire you the most?

Kid Cudi, Kanye, and Nipsey Hussle

7. What artists have you learned from and what did they teach you?

I learned a lot from Nipsey Hussle. Mostly on how to be self-sufficient and have follow through.

8. Who are your favorite artists/what are your favorite albums?

Nipsey Hussle’s “Crenshaw” and Kid Cudi’s “Man on the Moon”

9. What advice do you have for new/upcoming artists?

Be as different as possible.

10. What do you enjoy the most about being an artist/songwriter?

The reaction of my fans and how my music affects them.

11. What next is coming in the upcoming months?

Just keeping my head down and focusing on the elevation of my brand. Also more music is on the way!

12. How did you learn to sing/write/play instruments?

When I was really young I started going to Southend Boys & Girls Club where a lady named Demmarie noticed my talent. She formulated a group around me where I would always be front and center. We performed all over, even out of state. I learned how to sing and write on my own from that experience. And now I am teaching myself how to play the guitar.

13. What is one thing you would like to change about the music industry?

How fickle it is.

14. What is the story behind your name?

My first name is Jan (pronounced John), it stems from the French language where I have family ties. Dready comes from the style of my hair.

15. Describe your sound.

Universal!

How to Land an Internship with DVF

Picture2Summer has finally arrived! Congrats Class of 2017! Go Cougs! Whether you have just graduated or finished school for the summer, we are all happy to be out! Now that it is summer it is a great time to land an internship. Internships are great way to gain workplace and leadership experience. Although not all internships are paid they are always a great way to get one step ahead in the workforce. Most career fields are very competitive especially my industry, the fashion industry. However an internship will provide the experience and networks to improve anyones credentials and make them a stronger candidate for future jobs.

I will be starting my internship this summer when I return from Milan. Although this is my first internship I strongly recommend doing more than one. Essentially the more internships you do the more experience you gain. In some college majors such as mine, Apparel Merchandising, internships are required before receiving their diploma. Undergrads in my program (Apparel Merchandising, Design, and Textiles) typically complete their internships their after Junior or Senior year. My friend and fellow WSU alumna member, Keena Hudson, is one undergrad who decided to do her internship her Junior year. She took interest in Diane Von Furstenberg’s Technical Design/Production internship. When I asked her why she picked DVF she said, “I really liked what the company stood for, women’s empowerment and growth. This company was started by a strong female entrepreneur, Diane herself. I also really liked how the company is involved in charity efforts to promote women’s leadership.” But of course, I had to find out more!

Getting to intern at DVF in New York City would be any fashion major’s dream! Like myself, many of you are probably wondering how Keena landed an internship with such a legendary company. When I asked her she said, “I actually had to email a DVF assistant about internships there. I looked through the website and found contact info. I really just googled companies I liked and internships available.” Keena told me a lot about her experience at DVF. She expressed that the most valuable things she learned was “learning to know when to ask for help and advice.” She also said she realized that “it’s very important to stay connected with your coworkers and the people who mentor you. They have a lot of connections on their own and are a great first connection.” I asked Keena what advice she would give to future interns, she stated, “I advice students to have a website of all the things they did and learned as an undergrad and also to be very diligent in applying to internships. Keep your options open and apply everywhere. Every internship experience is worth it no matter the size of the company.”

Thanks to Google contacting the right people to land an internship at DVF or any luxury brand is easy. Being diligent in applying to internships is the key! A strong application and interview is also needed to actually get the position of course. Luckily for you I have a few interview tips that have helped me land my internship and past jobs!

Interview tips:

1. Research the company you are interviewing for. Companies are looking for candidates who know about the company and have genuine interest in being a part of it. It always good to stay up to date with what’s going on in your industry. nrf.com is a good reference for the fashion industry.

2. Practice the S.T.A.R. (Situation, Task, Action, Result) Method. Behavioral-based questions are asked a lot in interviews. The interviewer wants to get a good idea of how you interact with others and handle situations. Google the S.T.A.R. Method for more info!

3. Refresh your memory of past or sample interview questions. You can never be too prepared. Refreshing your memory of interview questions will help you have an idea of what things are important to mention about yourself and not feel so nervous.

4. Boost your confidence! Convince yourself that you have already got the job. Confidence is a huge key in being a strong candidate.

5. Brag about yourself! An interview is the time to really sell yourself as the top candidate for the job. Don’t get too carried away of course. You want to make yourself memorable, coachable and qualified!

I hope these tips helped! Let me know what interview-prep techniques work best for you!

Fun Fact:

Every summer DVF has company parties. In 2016 (the year Keena interned there) it was at the Statue of Liberty. Keena was actually able to meet Diane herself and walk up to the statues crown level. It was an exclusive event for DVF even though the statue had been closed previously.

My Top 10: June

file1

1. “Tell Me” x Sabrina Claudio

I am so obsessed with this song! I listen to it almost everyday. I discovered Sabrina Claudio on Spotify (via “Confidently Lost”) and she instantly became my new favorite artist! You can tell from her music that she is heavily influenced by Jazz music which I love (Jaz is literally one of my four middle names)!

2. “4 Lit” x B.o.B ft. Ty Dolla $ign & T.I.

Like many songs, I came about this song by my boyfriend playing it. It’s honestly tied with “Tell Me” as my most favorite. The beat is so dope and has a sonic sound. The title speaks for itself.

3. “Unravel” x Sabrina Claudio

This is one of Sabrina Claudio’s newer songs. I really love the energy and melody.

4. “Unforgettable” x PnB Rock

In my opinion PnB Rock is one of the few artists who actually deserved being titled a XXL freshman… but I won’t get into that. It would be a whole other post. This song is hot! He put a nice twist to the song.

5. “Cranes in the Sky” x Solange

I am questioning myself on why I don’t listen to Solange more often. I should probably re-evaluate my life more but this song is amazing. Solange is so brilliant, unique, and creative. She does such a great job of putting her talent in her music and visuals.

6. “Weekend” x SZA

How predictable was this? We all know that SZA just came out with her new album, “Ctrl” (unless you’re living under a rock) and it is fiiiiiirrrrre! I change the lyrics and make my own when I am singing it but SZA did her thing! Her voice is so pure and beautiful. If you haven’t listened to this song (or her album) make sure you do!

7. “Whatever You Need” x Meek Mill x Chris Brown

Me and my friends back home all love this song. It’s a great collab and summer song!

8. “Redbone” x Childish Gambino

This is kinda self-explanatory… I don’t even think I really need to say anything else.

9. “Wild Thoughts” x DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller

Another One! Look guys, DJ Khaled used to get on my last nerve but I respect the man and his hustle. This song just proves that he’s a creative genius from the song sample to the artists he chose. He’s doing his thing.

10. “Set It Off” x Bryson Tiller

I am honestly sad that this is the only song I truly enjoyed off of his new album. I had high expectations being that his last project was amazing as hell. Well thank you for this one Bryson.

What do you guys think of these songs? Tell me what your top 10 of June is. Ciao!
